Niagara Falls isn’t just a bucket-list destination for world-travellers – it’s also a fantastic place for a family-friendly getaway!

Whether you’re visiting for a summer getaway, a March Break escape, or a fun-filled Family Day, there are plenty of activities to keep both kids and adults entertained.

What’s even better? You don’t need to break the bank to have a great time. Growing up, my family spent countless days enjoying the natural beauty of the Canadian Falls, wandering through the parks, and treating ourselves to a stop at Hershey’s Chocolate World or Clifton Hill – without doing any of the paid attractions!

Here’s my list of best things to do on a Family trip to Niagara Falls, Canada based on my frequent visits to the area.

Sometimes, the best family experiences are the simplest ones, and a walk along the Niagara Falls promenade is proof of that. This free activity is perfect for kids of all ages, giving them a chance to see the Horseshoe, American, and Bridal Veil Falls all without the need for tickets.

One of my favourite childhood memories is watching the powerful water cascade over the edge of the Horseshoe Falls. I found it mesmerising and could stand there for hours. My parents would often have to drag me away! 

The views all along the parkways and sheer size of the Falls make this an unforgettable experience for kids and adults too!

If you’re traveling with kids, Clifton Hill is a must-visit spot in Niagara Falls. It’s colourful, chaotic, and packed with fun. 

While adults might find it a bit touristy, kids see it as an absolute wonderland – in fact, the last time I was there, I overheard a child excitedly declare, “This is the best place on Earth!”

When my own kids became teenagers, they loved exploring Clifton Hill on their own. I would head to the Secret Garden Restaurant overlooking the Falls and relax on the patio while the teens explore Clifton Hill with friends.

What makes Clifton Hill so great for families? It has something for every age and interest, from arcade games to tourist attractions:

If you want the most exciting ride, stand at the very front of the boat – this is where you’ll get the most mist and the best photos! However, if you have younger kids who might not like getting soaked, grab a spot toward the back where it’s drier. 

If your family loves adventure, this iconic Niagara Falls experience is not to be missed.

Kids are certainly welcome on board the Niagara boat cruise and there were lots on the boat the last time I went. As you get closer to the Falls, the roar of the water is quite loud and the mist is intense, and for a moment, it is hard to see anything at all if you are at the front of the boat. 

At this point, older children, perhaps 8 and up, were thoroughly enjoying the ride, but some of the younger children looked a little unsure. 

If you’re bringing younger kids, I’d recommend starting toward the back of the boat, where it’s drier and less overwhelming. Once they get used to the mist and noise, you can slowly move forward if they’re feeling more adventurous. 

But if your family loves excitement, standing right at the front is an experience you won’t forget – it’s where you’ll get the most mist and the best photos!

4. Journey Behind the Falls – A Close-Up Adventure for Kids

For a new perspective on Niagara Falls, Journey Behind the Falls is an unforgettable experience that kids and adults alike will love.

Descending 38 meters (125 feet) below ground, you’ll walk through 130-year-old tunnels carved into solid bedrock, leading to observation decks right next to the thundering Horseshoe Falls.

Most people visit Journey Behind the Falls in summer, but did you know that in winter, it turns into a frozen wonderland? Massive icicles form around the tunnels, and the Falls sometimes partially freeze, making it one of the most unique sights in Niagara!

Why It’s Great for Families:

• Closest viewpoint of the Falls – This is as near as you can get without being on a boat!
• Safe & contained viewing area – The observation decks are in a small space, making it easier to keep an eye on the kids.
• Fun in any season – In summer, the mist is refreshing, and in winter, the icy formations make it feel like a frozen wonderland.
• A thrilling but not-too-scary adventure – Perfect for kids who love a bit of excitement but might not be ready for the full Maid of the Mist or Hornblower boat ride.

Every time I visit, I’m amazed by the power of the water crashing down just meters away. If you’re visiting in summer, go early in the morning before the crowds arrive – otherwise, expect long lines and busy observation decks, especially on the weekends!

5. Zipline to the Falls – A Thrilling Adventure for Older Kids

Although there is always a line of visitors for the Zipline to the Falls, I haven’t been brave enough to try it yet!

The zipline sends riders soaring 670 meters (2,200 feet) along the edge of the Niagara River Gorge, reaching speeds of over 70 km/h (40+ mph) before landing at the observation deck near the base of Horseshoe Falls.

Why It’s Great for Families:

• Perfect for older kids – With a minimum age of seven, this is a great option for tweens and teens looking for an exciting way to experience the Falls.
• Side-by-side ziplines – Four parallel lines allow family members to ride at the same time, making it a shared adventure.
• Incredible aerial views – Gliding through the air with the Falls as your backdrop is a unique and unforgettable experience.

This is one of the pricier attractions in Niagara Falls, so it may not be for every family and the lines can be really long. I recommend purchasing a skip the line ticket for this attraction in the summer. Running shoes are also required, so some planning is required.

Local Tip: If you just want a great view and photo, head to the front of the tower where you can watch the zipliners while soaking in the panoramic views.

6. Skylon Tower – The Best Panoramic Views of Niagara Falls

For families who love amazing views, a trip to the top of the Skylon Tower is a must. While the tower itself may feel a bit dated, the 360-degree panoramic views more than make up for it. 

From the observation deck, you can see Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls, Clifton Hill, and even the Toronto skyline on a clear day.

I find that visiting at sunset is the best time to go as you can see the Falls in the day and then lit up at night. If you’re visiting in summer, another option is to time your visit to coincide with the nightly fireworks for an even more magical experience!

Why It’s Great for Families:

• Unbeatable views – Seeing Niagara Falls from above gives kids a whole new perspective on just how massive and powerful the waterfalls are.
• Indoor and outdoor observation areas – Whether it’s windy, cold, or raining, you can still enjoy the view from perspectives.
• A great way to reflect on your trip – If you go after exploring Niagara Falls, kids will love pointing out all the spots they’ve been to throughout the day.

There’s an arcade on the ground level, but I’d recommend skipping it in favour of the bigger and better one on Clifton Hill. Instead, spend your time soaking in the incredible views – it’s an experience your family won’t forget.

7. Butterfly Conservatory – A Magical Indoor Experience for Families

This is one of my favourite attractions in Niagara. The Butterfly Conservatory is a small paradise filled with over 2,000 vibrant butterflies flying freely around you. My kids loved visiting when they were young, especially when a butterfly would land right on them!

The enclosed space is perfect for families, offering a safe and interactive experience where kids can explore and watch the butterflies up close.

Why It’s Great for Families:

• Butterflies land on you – Wearing bright colours increases the chance of a butterfly gently resting on your hand or shoulder, which is always an exciting moment for kids.
• A calm, enclosed environment – This small conservatory is easy to navigate, making it a great option for younger children.
• Fun in any weather – Since it’s entirely indoors, this is a great option for rainy days, hot summers, or chilly winter visits.

Some children (and even adults) may feel a little nervous about butterflies at first, but most quickly warm up to the experience as they see others enjoying it. If you’re visiting in the summer, grab a treat from the Garden Café, which serves ice cream and snacks after your visit. 

Whether your kids are fascinated by nature or just love new experiences, the Butterfly Conservatory is a wonderful, low-key activity that adds a touch of magic to your Niagara Falls trip.

8. Waterparks – Year-Round Splashing Fun for Families

Niagara Falls is home to several indoor water parks, giving families lots of choice when looking for a family-friendly holiday. 

Whether you visit Fallsview Indoor Waterpark, Americana Waterpark Resort & Spa, or Great Wolf Lodge, you’ll find thrilling slides, massive wave pools, and exciting splash zones that keep kids entertained for hours.

We found a trip to the Niagara Falls water parks to be ideal during the cold Canadian winter months. In particular, a visit to Niagara Falls in mid-February made for a perfect staycation with our family. 

Why It’s Great for Families:

• Perfect for all ages – With everything from thrilling slides to gentle splash areas, there’s something for toddlers, tweens, and teens.
• Year-round fun – The waterparks are kept at a warm 84°F (29°C) all year, making them a great option for a winter getaway.
• Huge variety of attractions – From a 1,000-gallon tipping bucket to wave pools and interactive play areas, there’s non-stop excitement.
• Hotel convenience – Fallsview Indoor Waterpark is connected to Sheraton Fallsview, Crowne Plaza, and Skyline Hotel, making it easy to turn your visit into an overnight stay.

For families looking to escape the cold in winter or simply enjoy a fun-filled day indoors, Niagara’s waterparks are a fantastic option that guarantees hours of family fun.

9. Aero Cable Car – A Short but Scenic Ride Over the Niagara Whirlpool

Imagine riding 3,500 feet above the Niagara Whirlpool at the end of the Niagara rapids in an antique cable car that’s been in operation since 1916. The view from the Aero Cable Car is so awesome, I actually went across twice in a row.

Though it may look daring in photos, it’s actually a safe and stable ride that provides incredible views without being too intense for kids. Just be sure to hold onto your phone! This was always a favourite activity for my kids. They loved the views in addition to experience of riding the cable car.

Why It’s Great for Families:

• Amazing aerial views – Kids will love looking down at the swirling Niagara Whirlpool from above.
• Short and engaging – At just 15 minutes, it’s a great activity for families who want a scenic experience without a long time commitment.
• Educational element – The onboard guides share interesting history and facts about the gorge, making it both fun and informative.
• Secure and comfortable – While it’s a standing-only ride, it feels stable and safe, making it a great choice even for kids who might be hesitant about heights.

Halfway through the ride, everyone switches sides so that all passengers get an equal view of the Niagara Whirlpool. Since it’s located near the White Water Walk, it’s easy to pair these two attractions as part of your Niagara Falls visit.

10. White Water Walk – A Short but Powerful Nature Experience for Families

Most people stop at the main Falls viewing areas, but the White Water Walk gives you a totally different perspective. Here, you’re standing right next to Class 6 rapids (the most dangerous in the world)! 

It’s an easy, stroller-friendly walk that’s much calmer than Clifton Hill, and the wooden boardwalk and viewing platforms makes for great family photos. My kids loved seeing the water up close – and it’s much calmer than the Clifton Hill crowds.

Why It’s Great for Families:

• A safe way to experience the power of the river – Kids will love seeing the rapids from just a few feet away.
• Short and easy walk – At only 1/4 mile, it’s perfect for young kids and won’t take more than 30-45 minutes, making it a quick but memorable stop.
• Ideal for family photos – With stunning river views and a scenic boardwalk, it’s a great place to snap some unforgettable pictures.

We enjoyed walking along the boardwalk, stopping at the viewing platforms, and taking in the incredible power of the river. If you’re looking for a relaxing but awe-inspiring nature experience, this is a great addition to any Niagara Falls itinerary.

11. Bird Kingdom – An Up-Close Wildlife Adventure for Families

Most people don’t realize that Bird Kingdom is home to hundreds of exotic birds that fly freely around you! As the world’s largest indoor free-flying aviary, it offers a unique opportunity to see and interact with hundreds of tropical birds in a lush, multi-level rainforest setting.

Why It’s Great for Families:

• Interactive bird encounters – Kids can feed and hold playful lorikeets at Lorikeet Landing for a small additional fee, creating a memorable experience.
• Birds fly freely – Unlike a traditional zoo, this aviary allows birds to roam, making it feel like a real jungle adventure.

12. Cave of the Winds – The Ultimate Up-Close Waterfall Experience

Though Cave of the Winds is on the American side of Niagara Falls, it’s well worth crossing the border for this incredible experience. It is an experience like no other – especially the opportunity to stand on Hurricane Deck. 

Located on Goat Island inside New York’s Niagara State Park, this self-guided boardwalk adventure takes you to the base of Bridal Veil Falls, where you can get so close that you can reach out and touch the rushing water.

Why It’s Great for Families:

• A true up-close waterfall experience – The Hurricane Deck, just 20 feet from Bridal Veil Falls, lets kids and adults stand in the mist for a thrilling, drenching adventure.
• Exciting and interactive – Kids love running back and forth on the wooden boardwalks, feeling the mist, and watching the falls from different angles.
• Options for all comfort levels – Families with younger kids can stick to the observation deck located 150 feet away for a drier, safer viewing experience.
• A great mix of adventure and nature – Unlike a boat cruise, this attraction allows you to move at your own pace while still feeling the power of the falls.

To visit, families can walk across the Rainbow Bridge with passports and $1 cash per person. Since tickets are only sold in person, it’s best to arrive early to secure a time slot. For those who want the closest possible experience to the Falls, Cave of the Winds is an unforgettable highlight of any Niagara Falls trip.

13. Dufferin Islands Park – A Peaceful Nature Escape for Families

If your kids need a break from the hustle and bustle of Clifton Hill, head to Dufferin Islands, a hidden network of small, tree-covered islands connected by footbridges. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic or a little nature walk. 

In the winter, it transforms into a magical Winter Festival of Lights display, making it feel like a Christmas fairytale!

Why It’s Great for Families:

• A calm break from the busy attractions – After the excitement of Niagara Falls, this is a great place for kids to run around and explore nature at their own pace.
• Easy, scenic walking paths – The flat trails and bridges make it stroller-friendly and perfect for young kids.
• Picnic and BBQ areas – Families can bring lunch or snacks and enjoy an outdoor meal surrounded by nature.
• A magical winter experience – From November through January, the park transforms with nature-themed light displays as part of the Winter Festival of Lights.

Dufferin Islands Park is free to visit, though parking is metered. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing afternoon picnic, a scenic walk, or a peaceful escape, this hidden gem is a great addition to your family’s Niagara Falls itinerary.

14. Niagara Glen Nature Reserve – A Mini Hike with Amazing Views

Most families don’t realize that Niagara Falls has incredible hiking trails, just minutes from the main attractions. 

The Niagara Glen Nature Reserve offers a free, scenic escape with winding trails, stunning views of the Niagara River Whirlpool, and a chance to experience the natural beauty of the Niagara Gorge up close. It’s also free to visit.

Why It’s Great for Families:

• Beginner-friendly trails – The main loop and river trail are the best options for families looking for an easy but rewarding hike.
• Scenic views – Overlooks of the Whirlpool Rapids and Niagara River make this a great spot for nature lovers and photographers.
• Fun for active kids – Many kids love scrambling over the large boulders along the trail, turning it into a mini adventure.
• A different side of Niagara Falls – Away from the crowds, this hike offers a peaceful, natural escape.

If your family enjoys outdoor adventures, take the Niagara Glen Trail down into the gorge. The trail leads to stunning views of the Whirlpool Rapids, and kids love climbing over the giant boulders along the way. 

Tip: Wear sturdy shoes, as some parts of the trail can be rocky. It’s especially beautiful in the autumn, when the leaves add even more color to the landscape.

For families with energetic kids who love adventure, Whirlpool Adventure Park offers an exciting treetop trekking course with ziplining, tightropes, cargo nets, and rope swings. 

Most visitors go for the zipline at the Falls, but few know about this treetop obstacle course just down the road!

Set against the stunning backdrop of the Niagara Whirlpool, this outdoor obstacle course is both physically challenging and incredibly fun.

Why It’s Great for Families:

• Designed for kids – The single-level course reaches up to 15 feet high, making it a great choice for kids aged 5 to 12 who want a safe but exciting challenge.
• A mix of fun and fitness – Walking across tightropes, climbing nets, and ziplining keeps kids active while having fun.
• An adventure with a view – Parents can snap amazing photos of the Niagara Whirlpool while cheering on their kids.
• Encourages confidence and problem-solving – The course gets more challenging as you go, helping kids build confidence and test their abilities.

This is an ideal activity for families who enjoy outdoor challenges, but it’s not for everyone – if heights or physical obstacles aren’t your thing, it may not be the best fit. 

Tip: Go in the morning when it’s less crowded, and bring gloves if your kids don’t like holding onto ropes for long! Bring a water bottle, wear comfortable clothing, and visit on a shady day for the best experience. 

16. Floral Showhouse – A Whimsical Garden Escape for Families

• A fun and safe place to explore – Kids can run along the garden pathways, discover mini treehouses, and take in the sights without worry.
• Whimsical exhibits – Displays like the Whimsical Creatures exhibit use thousands of plants to form topiary-like sculptures, turning the garden into an imaginative wonderland.
• A seasonal experience – The displays change throughout the year, from lush summer gardens to poinsettia-filled winter wonderlands, where families can even take photos with Santa.

Although it is small, I really enjoy visiting this attraction. I was particularly impressed with the animal sculptures made with vegetation. The floral displays also rotate, so there’s something new to see with every visit. It’s a delightful stop for families looking to add a little beauty and creativity to their Niagara Falls adventure.

17. Niagara Power Station – A Hands-On, Illuminated Look at History

The Niagara Power Station offers a fascinating mix of history, engineering, and interactive exhibits, making it a great stop for families with older kids. 

While younger children may not fully appreciate the historical details, there are some hands-on elements and a long underground tunnel that adds an element of adventure.

• The tunnel experience – Kids love running through the 2,200-foot tunnel that leads to an observation deck with views of Niagara Falls at the end.
• A great evening activity – The nighttime light show and narration bring the power station’s history to life in a visually stunning way that kids enjoy.
• Self-guided flexibility – Skipping the guided tour is best for families, as younger kids may find it overwhelming. Exploring at your own pace allows you to focus on the more engaging exhibits.

While this attraction is more appealing for older children and history lovers, families with younger kids can still enjoy the interactive elements and the tunnel walk. It’s best at night when the tower is lit up, making it even more exciting.

If you’re looking for a unique blend of education and adventure, this is a great addition to your Niagara Falls itinerary.

18. Visit a Niagara Winery

You might not think that a wintery is a great place for kids, but there are many excellent Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries that welcome children. While wine tasting is a main feature of the wineries, many have incredible patios and restaurants that have excellent food options.

Kid-Friendly Winery Recommendations

• Pillitteri Estates Winery – a relaxed winery with the most delicious wood fired pizzas served on an outdoor patio. Kids are welcome and the pizzas are excellent. My personal recommendation is the Sweet Heat pizza!
• Peller Estates Winery – a large winery with an outdoor patio and Muskoka chairs overlooking the vineyards. Let the kids play on the large lawn while the adults relax and enjoy a drink and some refreshments.
• Wayne Gretzky Estates – In the winter, there’s a skating rink, and throughout the year, kids can enjoy activities like ping pong and corn hole in the yard.

Don’t rule out Ontario’s incredible wineries from your trip. This is a perfect opportunity to enjoy some adult time in a kid-friendly atmosphere.

19. Fireworks and Illuminated Falls – A Magical End to the Day

Watching the Niagara Falls fireworks and evening illumination is one of the best ways to end a family day at the Falls. Running nightly in the summer and on select dates during the Winter Festival of Lights, this short but spectacular display lights up the sky over the waterfalls, creating an unforgettable experience for kids and adults alike.

Why It’s Great for Families:

• A stunning, free experience – Families can enjoy the fireworks without spending a dime, making it a budget-friendly highlight of the trip.

Visiting Niagara Falls in winter? From November to early January, the Winter Festival of Lights transforms the area into a sparkling wonderland with over 75 light displays and three million twinkling lights. 

Best of all, this family-friendly event is completely free and can be enjoyed by walking or driving the trail.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is a charming, historical town located about 30 minutes from Niagara Falls, known for its boutique shops, quaint streets, restaurants and cafes, and lakeside views.

While my husband and I often enjoy a romantic weekend in Niagara-on-the-Lake as a mini-vacation from Toronto there are still a few fun spots for kids to enjoy.

Why Kids Will Enjoy a Short Visit:

• COWS Ice Cream offers delicious, creamy flavors and fun cow-themed merchandise.
• Olde Tyme Candy Shoppe and Maple Leaf Fudge are great stops for classic sweets and handmade treats.
• Queen’s Royal Park is a beautiful lakeside park with picnic areas and scenic views of Lake Ontario, perfect for a short, relaxing stop.
• Fort George National Historic Site is a War of 1812 military landmark with tours and live demonstrations, giving kids an interactive way to experience history.

While Niagara-on-the-Lake is a lovely place to explore for a few hours, I’d recommend staying in Niagara Falls if you’re traveling with kids. There’s far more to do in the evenings, and the energy of Niagara Falls is better suited for families looking for nonstop excitement and adventure.

Ideal Niagara Falls Itinerary with Kids

If I were planning the perfect day with kids in Niagara Falls, I’d start with a visit to the Journey Behind the Falls before it gets too busy. Then, I’d walk along the Falls promenade taking some family pictures along the way. 

From there, take the Hornblower Boat Cruise. After, spend some time in Clifton Hill playing the arcade games, a game of mini golf, and take a ride on the Niagara SkyWheel. 

We’d end the day watching the Falls Illumination from Table Rock Centre – an unforgettable way to wrap up a family adventure!
