What is Cave of the Winds?
Cave of the Winds is an outdoor adventure that takes you right to the base of Bridal Veil Falls on the American side of the Falls.
It starts with a fascinating multimedia exhibit and short film, giving you a glimpse into Niagara Falls‘ history and its natural significance.
You’ll then take an elevator down 175 feet to the Niagara Gorge below. From there, you’ll walk along outdoor wooden walkways and observation decks that allow you to see and touch parts of Niagara Falls.
You can even stand under the Falls on the Hurricane Deck. Be prepared to get drenched on this attraction!
What is Journey Behind the Falls?
Located in Canada, Journey Behind the Falls takes you through a series of underground tunnels leading to Canadian Horseshoe Falls. First you catch an elevator ride down to the tunnels below. From there, you can walk to two outdoor observation decks that bring you close to the Horseshoe Falls.
Inside the tunnels, you’ll also find two viewing portals that provide a glimpse behind the cascading water of the Horseshoe Falls.
While it’s not as expansive as Cave of the Winds, it gives a unique perspective of Horseshoe Falls making Journey Behind the Falls worth experiencing.
Verdict: Cave of the Winds
I believe Cave of the Winds to be the better experience overall. It allows you to see more, get closer, and even touch the falls.
While Journey Behind the Falls gives a unique perspective of Horseshoe Falls, Cave of the Winds provides a better view and immersive experience.

When visiting Niagara Falls, the views are a big part of the experience. Both attractions offer unique perspectives, but they focus on different waterfalls.

At Cave of the Winds, you’ll get incredibly close to the American and Bridal Veil Falls. One of the highlights is standing just 20 feet (6 meters) from the base of Bridal Veil Falls, where you’ll feel the full force of the wind and water.

While you can’t touch the water here, you will get wet from the mist. Standing this close to the Horseshoe Falls is unforgettable.
However, the viewing portals behind the falls are small, with barriers that keep you back frm the Falls, making it less immersive compared to Cave of the Winds.
