When you purchase your tickets, you will select a date and time that best suit your plans. Keep in mind that even with timed tickets, some wait time before boarding is still likely.

If you buy tickets online, you have the option to add Ticket Assurance for an extra CAD $3.35, which allows you to get a refund or reschedule your tickets. Without this assurance, all sales are final, although you can make changes up to 48 hours before your scheduled time.

Do you need to buy your tickets in advance for Hornblower?

In my opinion, it’s usually not necessary to buy your tickets in advance for Hornblower. I’ve visited several times this summer, and there were always tickets and times available on the same day.

My recommendation would be to head to the ticket booth first upon your arrival and choose a time that best suits you for that day.

The only time I’d plan to pre-purchase your ticket is if you’re visiting on a holiday or long weekend, like Canada Day or Labour Day weekends when it will be very busy.

Experience the Falls at Night with Hornblower’s Fireworks Cruise

Hornblower also offers a special Falls Fireworks Cruise. This 40-minute evening cruise lets you admire Niagara Falls at night with an up-close view of the fireworks.

While the nighttime tours only sail to the outer edge of the Falls, the combination of illuminated waterfalls and fireworks is a unique evening experience.

I do recommend pre-purchasing your tickets for this cruise, as this one will sell out during the prime season. The fireworks are operated by Niagara Parks and are weather-dependent.

During the summer, boats typically operate from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. In the peak season, two boats operate and depart every 15 minutes.

Boarding the Boat

The Hornblower boat approaches the base of the American Falls at Niagara Falls, filled with passengers in red ponchos. Maid of the Mist

Maid of the Mist operates in New York State Park, also known as Niagara Falls State Park. Boarding for Maid of the Mist takes place near the Welcome Centre at Niagara Falls State Park on the American side.

Guests access the dock via an elevator that takes them down to the river level.

Hornblower

Hornblower’s boarding area is located at the Lower Landing in the Great Gorge on the Canadian side.

What to Expect on the Boat Cruise

Prepare for absolutely spectacular views of all three falls that you won’t get from any other vantage point, whether you’re on the Canadian or American side.

The boat takes you into the centre of the Horseshoe Falls, where you’ll be surrounded on three sides by the cascading water.

For the best views, I suggest standing on the left side of the boat on the way out to the falls and then heading to the back of the boat on the return trip.

Overall, the ride is smooth, thanks to the electric boats, but as you approach the Horseshoe Falls, the spray intensifies, making it difficult to see at times, and it gets quite loud.

At this point, it’s hard to take photos because of the powerful mist, so I recommend putting your phone away and just soaking in the moment. You’ll spend several minutes at the base of the Horseshoe Falls, giving you plenty of time to fully appreciate the experience.

For the best photo opportunities, head to the back of the boat, where you can capture some excellent photos with views of the falls behind you!

Will You Get Wet on the Hornblower and Maid of the Mist?

Yes, you will definitely get wet!

On the Maid of the Mist, we got absolutely soaked. While your poncho provides some protection, your feet are going to get wet, so consider bringing water-resistant footwear or a change of shoes.

We stood at the front of the boat, which put us right in the thick of the spray. If you prefer to stay drier, the lower level towards the back tends to stay the driest. Weather conditions can also play a big role as the cruise operates rain or shine.

Will Kids Enjoy the Niagara Boat Cruise?

Kids of all ages were on board when we took our tour, and reactions varied.

Some kids seemed to love the experience, while others, especially the littler ones, found it a bit frightening. The mist gets pretty intense, and the roar of the Falls can be quite loud as you get closer.

If you’re travelling with younger children, I recommend standing at the back of the boat, where you can still enjoy the views without being right in the thick of the spray. You can always move closer if your kids are up for it.

Based on my recent visit here are a few tips:

When buying tickets online, make sure you have carefully checked that you are purchasing for the correct side of the Falls.
Buy your Hornblower tickets as soon as you arrive. This will ensure you pick the best time for your cruise based on your plans for the day.
Consider going on a cruise later in the day (after 5 p.m.) for reduced crowds.
Be prepared to get wet. In particular, you will want to think about your shoes.
Bring a waterproof camera or use a waterproof case.
Bring a hairbrush. I got drenched. I wish I had brought a brush, as my hair was an absolute mess after the trip.
Bring a drying cloth for your glasses and phones. The mist from the Falls is strong. A cloth will help you dry off your lenses and help you see!
If photos are important to you, plan your “must-have” photos ahead of time. It’s hard to see from the mist, and everything is wet, so you might not get that ideal picture if you don’t have a plan!

Hornblower vs Maid of the Mist … Which is Better, and Why?

Both Hornblower and Maid of the Mist are excellent choices and worth including in your Niagara Falls itinerary.

The differences between the two are minor, and both provide a similar experience on the water. Of course, your choice may ultimately be controlled by where you are located!

Remember, the Hornblower departs from the Canadian side, while Maid of the Mist departs from the American side.

If I had to choose, I’d lean towards Maid of the Mist as the best choice for a few reasons. It includes access to the observation tower and the staircase beside the American Falls leading to the Crow’s Nest, offering some extra views and experiences.

From my observations, Maid of the Mist tends to be a bit less crowded, giving you more room to move around on the boat. The boats on Maid of the Mist are newer, and children 5 and under ride for free, compared to Hornblower, where only infants 2 and under are free.

However, the Hornblower offers an evening view of the Falls if you’d prefer to see Niagara Falls at night.
