Cave of the Winds is a thrilling attraction located on the American side of Niagara Falls in New York State Park. When I went, I didn’t realize just how close I’d get to the Falls—it was incredible.
It’s a timed, ticketed experience that takes visitors to the base of Bridal Veil Falls.
This isn’t a guided tour, but rather a self-paced walk along wooden boardwalks and observation decks to the base of Bridal Veil Falls. You’ll walk wooden boardwalks that bring you close enough to touch the powerful Falls.
It’s an unforgettable way to see the power of Niagara Falls up close, and it’s honestly unlike anything else I’ve done there.
Where is Cave of the Winds Located?

Cave of the Winds is inside Niagara State Park on Goat Island, on the New York side of the Falls.
You can reach it by walking or taking the Niagara Scenic Trolley. It’s about a 20-minute walk from the Rainbow Bridge or the main parking lot. Tickets can only be purchased in person at the main entrance, so plan to arrive early to secure your spot.
Purchasing Tickets to Cave of the Winds
Tickets for Cave of the Winds are sold on a timed-entry basis and must be purchased in person at the attraction’s entrance.
There are no advance ticket sales, so plan ahead as some dates do sometimes sell out, especially during holidays and the busy tourist season.

What to Expect on Cave of the Winds
Cave of the Winds is a self-guided experience, allowing you to explore at your own pace. Spend as much time as you like enjoying the exhibits, walkways, and breathtaking views of the falls.
The World Changed Here Pavilion
Your Cave of the Winds visit begins at The World Changed Here Pavilion, an indoor exhibit about the history of Niagara Falls.
It showcases how the falls looked before becoming a tourist destination, with interactive displays I found really interesting.
You’ll also watch a short, under-10-minute film that adds more context about the area and its transformation. It’s a great introduction to your adventure.
Elevator Ride Down to Cave of the Winds
After the film, your adventure begins with an elevator ride descending 175 feet into the Niagara Gorge. You’ll walk through old tunnels before emerging to collect a free souvenir poncho—definitely put it on because you will get wet!
This is also a good time to change into waterproof footwear like flip-flops or Crocs. If you bring a backpack, don’t worry; the poncho is large enough to cover it, keeping your belongings dry.
Walk the Wooden Walkways and Platforms
A short walk from the poncho collection area leads to the entrance of the wooden walkways. These paths and staircases offer multiple viewing platforms, letting you get up close to the waterfall and overlook the stunning Niagara Gorge.
You can take your time exploring the area, even going through the walkways multiple times if you like. There are over 200 stairs, but railings make it manageable. I recommend planning between an hour and two to fully enjoy the experience.
Views of the American and Bridal Veil Falls
From the walkways, you’ll experience a unique bottom-up view of Bridal Veil Falls. Winds can reach up to 68 miles per hour, and water rains down heavily, so expect to get soaked!
The paths are wet so you’ll want to wear water shoes or sandals. Sandals used to be provided but were discontinued in 2022—so you’ll want to bring your own.
Stop on Hurricane Deck
The Hurricane Deck is the highlight of the walkways, where you’ll stand just 20 feet (6 meters) from Bridal Veil Falls.
Here, you can either stand directly beside the falls for an unforgettable, drenching experience (like I did). You also have the option to stand back and watch others brave the cascade (my husband’s choice).
If getting soaked isn’t for you, there’s a bypass path that lets you skip this section. But standing under the falls is a once-in-a-lifetime experience I highly recommend, even though I was completely drenched afterward!
Restaurant, Rest Area, and Souvenir Shop
Once you’ve had your fill of the falls, take the elevator back up to the top. You’ll exit near a snack bar and souvenir shop, the perfect spot to dry off, grab a drink or ice cream, and relax before continuing your Niagara Falls adventure.
How Long Does Cave of the Winds Take?
The time needed at Cave of the Winds depends on your interests. Most visitors spend 45 minutes to 1.5 hours exploring the pavilion, observation decks, and wooden walkways.
To fully enjoy the experience, plan for at least an hour. In the busier months you may need longer, especially if there are lines to enter.
Is the Cave of the Winds Tour Suitable for Children?
Yes, it’s great for kids! They seemed to love walking along the paths and standing under the waterfall.
For families with young children, there’s a designated observation deck 150 feet from the base of the Falls, offering a safer, dry viewing spot.
Cave of the Winds in Winter
If you are visiting Niagara Falls in the winter you can still visit Cave of the Winds. It is open year-round, but the walkways are only accessible from May to October.
After October, the experience is shortened to viewing the falls from designated platforms, keeping you much drier while still enjoying the incredible winter scenery.
Tips for Visiting Cave of the Winds
- Buy tickets early: Purchase tickets first thing in the day, especially during summer, as they often sell out.
- Prepare to get wet: Bring waterproof shoes or a change of shoes to stay comfortable.
- Protect your camera: Use a waterproof case or cover to avoid water damage.
- No lockers available: Carry your belongings in a backpack, and keep it dry under your poncho.
- Accessibility note: There are many stairs, which may limit access for those with mobility issues or in wheelchairs.

Kids will love it too, making it a great family activity. While the Maid of the Mist provides a fantastic view from the water, Cave of the Winds lets you get incredibly close to the falls on foot. It’s an unforgettable adventure you won’t want to miss.
