If you’re visiting Toronto and planning a trip to Niagara Falls, one of the biggest decisions you’ll make is whether to rent a car or take the GO Train.
Most first-time visitors assume driving is the easiest option. After all, Niagara Falls is only about 130 kilometres from Toronto. But what many people don’t realize is that traffic on the QEW can easily add an hour or more to your journey, especially during rush hour or if there’s construction. Then there’s the cost of parking, which can be surprisingly expensive, especially if you are staying overnight.
I’ve travelled between Toronto and Niagara Falls many times over the years using just about every transportation option available, including driving, guided tours, buses, and the GO Train. While a car gives you the most flexibility, I often find myself choosing the GO Train instead. It’s predictable, affordable, and lets me spend the journey relaxing instead of sitting in stop-and-go traffic.
In fact, I’ve had friends leave Toronto by car at the same time I boarded the train and arrive later because of traffic leaving the city.

Is There a Direct GO Train From Toronto to Niagara Falls?
Yes, there are usually three direct GO Trains per day between Toronto and Niagara Falls in each direction, although you should always confirm the schedule yourself before going.
When I first looked into taking the GO Train, I assumed every train from Union Station went directly to Niagara Falls. That’s not actually the case. While GO Transit operates several services throughout the day, many require a transfer at Burlington.
Fortunately, finding the direct trains is easy. When searching on the GO Transit trip planner, filter your results to “train only” services to see departures that travel directly between Union Station and Niagara Falls.
Because there are only a few direct departures each day, I recommend checking your return train before you leave Toronto. I’ve seen visitors assume trains run every hour, only to discover they’ve missed the last direct departure and now have a much longer journey home.
Planning around the train schedule ahead of time will help you maximize your time in Niagara Falls ensuring you experience all the highlights while still catching the correct train!
How Long Does the GO Train Take to Niagara Falls?
A direct GO Train from Toronto to Niagara Falls takes approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes.
On paper, driving looks faster. In ideal conditions, the drive can take around 90 minutes – but this is rare and often requires leaving before the sun is up. The challenge is that traffic around Toronto is notoriously unpredictable.
That’s one of the reasons I often choose the GO Train. Once you’re on board, you know exactly when you’ll arrive.
For me, the predictability is often worth more than the time savings of driving. Instead of watching traffic updates and wondering whether congestion will add another 30 minutes to the trip, I can simply relax and enjoy the ride.
How Much Does the GO Train to Niagara Falls Cost?
This is where the GO Train really shines.
The GO Train is a commuter train, but there are some discounted rates for visitors – especially if you are travelling on the weekend or with a group. Taking the GO Train from Toronto to Niagara Falls is the cheapest ways to get to the falls via public transportation.
A standard adult fare from Toronto to Niagara Falls costs $21.15 one way, while PRESTO users pay a discounted fare of $18.09.
Seniors receive additional discounts, with fares starting at $10.60 or $9.63 with a PRESTO card.
Children under 12 travel free with a paying adult, making the GO Train an especially affordable option for families visiting Niagara Falls with kids.
Weekend Passes
If you’re travelling on a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday, the $10 GO Weekend Pass is the best deal available.
The pass includes unlimited travel on GO trains and buses for the entire day and is often cheaper than buying a regular return ticket. It’s one of my favourite transportation deals in Ontario, and I know plenty of locals who use it for spontaneous day trips throughout the region.
Group Passes
Travelling with family or friends? GO Transit also offers discounted group passes with unlimited travel for the day.
The larger your group, the better the value compared to purchasing individual tickets.
GO Train + WEGO Combination Passes
One of the best options for first-time visitors is the combined GO Train + WEGO pass, which includes both your train ticket and access to Niagara Falls’ WEGO bus system.
- One-day pass: approximately $22
- Two-day pass: approximately $35
Since most visitors will need transportation from Niagara Falls Station to the main tourist area, I usually recommend looking at the combo ticket first. It simplifies the trip and can save money compared to buying everything separately.

How to Take the GO Train to Niagara Falls
One of the reasons I like the GO Train is that it’s surprisingly easy to use, even if you’ve never taken public transportation in Toronto before.
Step 1: Get to Union Station
Your journey begins at Union Station, Toronto’s main transportation hub in downtown Toronto.
If you’re staying at a downtown Toronto hotel, you can walk, take the TTC, or grab a short Uber ride. If you’re flying into Toronto Pearson Airport, take the UP Express to Union Station. The journey takes about 25 minutes and drops you directly inside the station.
Union Station is large, but it’s well signposted. Once inside, check the departure boards for your train number and platform. If it’s your first time using the station, I recommend arriving 15 to 20 minutes early so you have time to find your platform without rushing.
Step 2: Buy Your Ticket
If you’re planning to use a weekend pass, group pass, or GO Train + WEGO package, buy your ticket online and save it to your phone.
One thing I love about the GO Train is that there’s very little advance planning required. Unlike other transportation options, you can purchase your ticket just minutes before departure.
You can also tap on using a credit card, debit card, or PRESTO card before boarding. However, visitors will often save money by purchasing one of the discounted passes instead.
Step 3: Board the Train
Once your platform is announced, board the train and find a seat.
Seats are not reserved, and I’ve never had trouble finding one, as most Niagara Falls travellers are heading in the opposite direction of Toronto’s commuter traffic. The trains are comfortable, with room for backpacks, carry-on bags, and luggage.
Keep your ticket or proof of payment handy, as inspectors may check tickets during the journey.
Step 4: Arrive in Niagara Falls
After about 2 hours and 20 minutes, you’ll arrive at Niagara Falls GO Station.
The station is roughly 3 kilometres from the falls, so you’ll need to take local transportation to reach the main tourist area.
Step 5: Take WEGO to the Falls
If you’re visiting Niagara Falls as a day trip, the WEGO bus is usually the easiest option.
The first time I arrived by train, I expected the transfer to be the most confusing part of the trip. Instead, it was one of the easiest. Staff were waiting at the station, directing passengers onto WEGO buses parked outside. Within minutes, we were on our way to the Niagara Parks Welcome Centre near Horseshoe Falls, and nobody even checked our WEGO tickets before boarding.
One thing to know is that the bus goes directly to the Welcome Centre. If you’re staying overnight and want to drop off luggage or check into your hotel first, a taxi or rideshare will usually be more convenient.
For day-trippers, though, I’d take the WEGO bus. It’s the quickest and simplest way to get from the station to the falls and start sightseeing right away.
Do You Need the WEGO Bus After Arriving?
For most visitors, yes.
While Niagara Falls GO Station is only about 3 kilometres from the falls, it’s not a walk I’d recommend for most tourists, especially if you’re carrying luggage, travelling with children, or planning to visit multiple attractions throughout the day.
Fortunately, Niagara Falls has an excellent tourist transportation system called WEGO, which makes it easy to get around without a car.

If you’re planning to visit more than just the falls viewpoint, WEGO makes it easy to get around without relying on taxis or rideshare.

Is It Worth Buying a WEGO Pass?
In my opinion, it depends on your itinerary.
If you’re only planning to see Horseshoe Falls, stroll along the Niagara Parkway, and spend some time on Clifton Hill, you may not need unlimited WEGO access. Many of the main attractions are within walking distance of each other once you’re in the tourist district.
However, if you’re planning a full day of sightseeing, visiting multiple Niagara Parks attractions, or exploring beyond the immediate falls area, a WEGO pass is usually worth it.
I particularly like the GO Train + WEGO combination ticket for first-time visitors. Since you’ll likely need transportation from the station anyway, bundling everything together simplifies the trip and can save money compared to purchasing tickets separately.
For most visitors arriving by train, I’d consider the combo ticket the easiest option. You can step off the train, hop on WEGO, and focus on enjoying Niagara Falls rather than figuring out transportation.
Common Mistakes to Avoid When Taking the GO Train to Niagara Falls
After answering this question countless times and taking the trip myself, these are the mistakes I see visitors make most often:
❎ Assuming Trains Run Frequently Throughout the Day
One of the biggest misconceptions is that direct GO Trains run every hour. In reality, the schedule can be surprisingly limited.
For example, on weekdays there is typically a direct train from Toronto in the morning and then another several hours later. While there are earlier options for the weekend, they are still limited.
If you’re traveling in the opposite direction – Niagara Falls to Toronto – the first train during the week is an early 6:40 a.m. departure but on weekends the first train doesn’t leave until noon.
Before your trip, I strongly recommend confirming both your outbound and return trains. Missing a direct train won’t ruin your day, but it can significantly change your plans and leave you spending more time travelling than sightseeing.
❎ Assuming the GO Train Is the Best Option From Pearson Airport
The GO Train is my favourite way to travel between downtown Toronto and Niagara Falls, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best option if you’re starting at Toronto Pearson Airport.
To take the train, you’ll first need to ride the UP Express from the airport to Union Station and then connect to the GO Train. Since direct Niagara Falls trains only run a few times per day, the schedules don’t always line up perfectly. Depending on when your flight lands, there might not be a train or you could be waiting at Union Station for quite some time for the next departure.
If you’re travelling directly from Pearson Airport to Niagara Falls, it’s worth comparing other options such as a private transfer, shuttle, or GO Bus service.

❎ Thinking the Train Stops Right Beside the Falls
The Niagara Falls GO Station is not located at the Horseshoe Falls. You’ll still need to take the WEGO bus, a taxi, or a rideshare to reach the main tourist area. Fortunately, the transfer is straightforward and easy.
❎ Assuming You Need to Buy Tickets Weeks in Advance
Unlike VIA Rail, Flixbus, or many European train systems, GO Transit doesn’t require advance reservations. I’ve seen visitors worry that trains will sell out, but it’s easy to purchase your ticket shortly before departure.
❎ Skipping the GO Train + WEGO Combination Ticket
Many first-time visitors buy transportation separately without realizing discounted or combination tickets are available. Depending on your plans, the bundled ticket can be both cheaper and more convenient.

Why I Often Choose the GO Train
For day trips and overnight stays focused on the main Niagara Falls attractions, I usually take the GO Train.
Once I’m in the tourist district, I rarely feel like I need a car. Between WEGO, walking, and the concentration of attractions around the falls, it’s easy to spend a full day sightseeing without driving anywhere.
I also like knowing exactly when I’ll arrive. Instead of focusing on traffic, I can use the journey to plan my day, answer emails, or simply enjoy the ride.
Why You Might Want a Car
A rental car makes more sense if you’re planning to explore beyond the main tourist area.
If you want to visit Niagara’s world-class wineries, spend time in Niagara-on-the-Lake, stop at smaller attractions along the Niagara Parkway, or build your own itinerary, having a car gives you much more flexibility.
It’s also the better option if you dislike working around schedules or want the freedom to stay in Niagara late.

My Recommendation for First-Time Visitors
If you’re visiting Niagara Falls for the first time and your itinerary includes attractions like the Niagara Boat Cruise, Clifton Hill, Journey Behind the Falls, the Skylon Tower, and the Niagara Power Station, I’d choose the GO Train.
I also find the GO Train especially appealing for international visitors. Many of the travellers in my Facebook group are from the UK and Australia, and one concern that comes up regularly is driving on the opposite side of the road. If that’s something you’re worried about, taking the train allows you to enjoy the trip without the added stress of adapting to unfamiliar driving conditions.
The only time I’d strongly recommend a rental car is if your trip is focused on exploring the wider Niagara Region rather than Niagara Falls itself.
For most first-time visitors, the GO Train is the simpler, cheaper, and a more enjoyable option.
