When we first pulled up to Moon Palace Jamaica in Ocho Rios, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I’m used to sprawling, luxury resorts, and this one felt noticeably more compact. But by the end of our weeklong stay with two teenagers in tow, I was already thinking about when we could come back.

From the genuinely friendly staff to the variety of restaurants, beautiful beach, and many entertainment options, this resort is the perfect balance of fun and relaxation. The beach was calm and easy to enjoy, and we found plenty to keep both us and the teens entertained without needing to leave the resort.

What stood out most, though, was how Moon Palace Jamaica blended an all-inclusive experience with real Jamaican warmth. If you’re planning a family trip and wondering if this resort is worth it this honest review will cover everything we learned during our stay.

Moon Palace Jamaica is a mid-sized, all-inclusive resort set along the coast of Ocho Rios, Jamaica. With around 700 guest rooms across two main towers, it’s far more intimate than its larger sister property in Cancun – something we came to really appreciate.

The resort is built from what were originally three separate hotels, now combined into one property. The result is a more relaxed, hotel-style vibe than a typical mega-resort.

Prime Location in Ocho Rios

Just 90 minutes from Montego Bay Airport, Moon Palace Jamaica offers free round-trip transfers – just make sure to book at least two weeks ahead. Once you’re there, the heart of Ocho Rios is a short 10-minute walk away, with easy access to the Craft Market and town center.

Cons of Moon Palace Jamaica (What to Know Before You Book)

  • 90-minute drive from Montego Bay Airport – it’s a beautiful drive, but it’s still a bit of a drive after a long flight
  • May not be ideal for couples or honeymooners looking for romance – there’s no adults-only section, and the vibe is very family-focused
  • Room views can vary – while many are pretty, don’t expect sweeping panoramic ocean views in every room
  • Balconies are small or French-style, which might be a letdown if you’re hoping for large outdoor lounging space
  • Beach is on the smaller side, tucked into a cove – calm and private, but not ideal for long beach walks

✓ Activities & Entertainment for All Ages: Despite being smaller than most mega-resorts, Moon Palace Jamaica kept us entertained from morning to night. We never felt the need to leave the property.

✓ Daily Activities: The beach and pool areas were full of energy, thanks to the amazing staff. My teens loved the poolside dance-offs and beach volleyball.

✓ Evening Shows: Live performances every night on the outdoor stage offered a relaxed, easy way to end the day.

✓ Dolphin Dock: You can swim with dolphins (extra cost) or simply enjoy watching them from the dock.

✓ Kid & Teen Fun: There’s a splash park, waterslide, FlowRider surf simulator, and the Wired Lounge arcade for tweens and teens needing a break from their parents!

✓ Excursion Access: The catamaran excursion leaves directly from the resort dock – no buses, no waiting. One of my favourite, unexpected, perks.

✓ Beach & Chair Setup: Chairs fill quickly during peak times, but staff were great at clearing unattended towels and helping guests find spots.

✓ Walkable Location: While we stayed on-site, it’s just a short stroll into downtown Ocho Rios – ideal if you want to explore beyond the hotel.

Room Options: What We Tried (and What We Recommend)

Moon Palace Jamaica has many different room categories you can choose from when you book your stay. We have stayed in both a family suite and a Presidential Suite during our visits.

Family Suite

We chose to stay in a Family Suite with guaranteed connecting rooms as we were travelling with teenagers. Our room had a king bed while theirs had two doubles. This was the perfect set up. We had the extra space while also enjoying our privacy. The girls loved having their own room and we were right next door!

  • Balcony: Small, with space for two chairs and a side table – great for morning coffee, but not for lounging.
  • View: We had a partial ocean view over rooftops; some rooms offer better angles. Try to request a high floor for the best views.

Presidential Suite

This suite felt like a luxury splurge – two oversized rooms with separate living areas, more like two apartments than a hotel room.

  • View: Stunning views of the ocean and one of the best we’ve had at an all-inclusive.
  • Balcony: Small balcony with off the one bedroom and french balconies from the other rooms.

Despite the extra space, we still recommend the Family Suite for best value, especially with teens or a group. You’re not in your rooms that often, so for the price difference, I’d choose the family suite. 

The resort combines three older hotels, so rooms vary depending on which building you are in. Ours felt clean and modern, but some guests in older sections have reported that rooms are a bit dated. If view or balcony size matters, try to request specific buildings or higher floors.

The Beach at Moon Palace Jamaica

Moon Palace Jamaica’s beach is small and tucked into a calm, protected cove. It’s a safe, sandy beach, without any big waves. 

We loved the laid-back vibe. I spent hours with a chair in the shallow water, book in hand – easily one of the most relaxing parts of our stay. The beach is roped off, keeping motorized watercraft out, but paddleboarding, kayaking, and Hobie Cats (all included) are easily arranged.

The sand was clean, the water clear, and we didn’t see any seaweed. While there are occasional reports of jellyfish stings, staff keep vinegar handy at beachside restaurants just in case.

For families or anyone who loves calm Caribbean waters, this swim-friendly, tranquil beach is a peaceful place to unwind.

Dining at Moon Palace Jamaica: What to Expect

When choosing a hotel, food is an important factor in that decision! Moon Palace Jamaica has a variety of dining options, with four main restaurants, a 24-hour café, 24-hour room service, and several snack spots sprinkled throughout the resort.

Is the food here the best I’ve had on vacation? No. But, it was very good and our family still talks about the Jerk Hut on the beach!

Dining Highlights

  • Buccaneers Reef: Gourmet buffet serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Great variety, including traditional Jamaican dishes – my teens couldn’t get enough of it.
  • La Gondola: Elegant Italian spot with rich pastas and well-executed classics.
  • Momo: Asian fusion with a lively Teppanyaki option (you’ll need a reservation for the hibachi tables).
  • Pier 8: Open-air seafood restaurant right on the water – our personal favourite for both breakfast and dinner thanks to the gorgeous views and consistently delicious food.
  • Boulangerie: A charming café serving fresh crepes, pastries, espresso drinks, and even ice cream – all day and night.
  • Snack Spots: Jerk chicken straight from the beach grill was our favourite, and the teens loved grabbing pizza near the pool.
  • Bars: Five on-site bars including swim-up, poolside, lobby, piano bar, and a lively sports bar. Don’t miss the Bob Marley cocktail – it’s a colourful (and tasty) favourite.

While the buffet was great for convenience (especially for our always-hungry teens), we personally preferred the à la carte restaurants for both the atmosphere and the food quality. 

For us, Pier 8 in particular stood out – it quickly became our go-to for breakfast and dinner with its stunning views and fresh seafood. The only disappointment was the room service, which didn’t match the standard of the other dining options.

With so many snack bars and casual spots scattered around the resort, we didn’t even manage to try everything – which, honestly, just gives us a reason to go back.

Pools, Splash Pad & Water Fun

Moon Palace Jamaica has four distinct pools, each offering a different experience – from lively and energetic to calm and peaceful. Our teens spent most of their time at the activity pool. There were volleyball games, water aerobics, and dance-offs led by the resort staff. They loved the constant choice of activity and they were never bored.

Meanwhile, my husband and I gravitated toward the quieter pools – perfect for reading, relaxing, and enjoying a cocktail in peace. It was nice to have both options within easy reach.

For families with younger kids, the Splash Pad and waterslide were a big hit. There is also a FlowRider Wave Simulator here that is a lot less busy than the one at Moon Palace Cancun. Less guests = shorter lines!

Excursions from Moon Palace Jamaica

Jamaica offers no shortage of incredible day trips and tours – but we were enjoying the resort so much, we only left for one: the sunset catamaran ride. It departed right from the on-site dock, which made things incredibly easy. It was so convenient to just board the boat – no buses, no waiting, just a quick walk and we were off.

The ride itself was one of my favourite moments of the trip. Calm waters, beautiful views, and a short swim stop made it a fun escape from the resort. We used our resort credits for this one and it was well worth doing. Just be sure to book early as this one gets full. 

☞ Pro Tip: If you are visiting Dunn River Falls, bring water shoes with you! They are mandatory and expensive to purchase at the resort or the falls. 

Kids Club & Playroom

For families with younger children, the Kids Club is a great perk. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., it’s designed for kids ages 4–12 and includes everything from jungle gyms and crafts to supervised activities. 

Since our teens are older, we didn’t use the playroom ourselves, but anyone we spoke to raved about how well-run and fun it is, especially for young children. It’s an excellent option for parents who want to enjoy a quiet dinner or some well-earned downtime while on vacation.

Awe Spa at Moon Palace Jamaica

If you’re looking for true relaxation, don’t skip the Awe Spa. It’s the largest in Jamaica, and it’s absolutely worth carving out a few hours for. I booked a massage and hydrotherapy session, and it ended up being one of the most peaceful, relaxing parts of our trip. The hydrotherapy circuit and hot tubs are especially fantastic.

A quick note for families: while teens can enjoy massages (our 16-year-olds were allowed with an accompanying adult), they aren’t permitted in the hydrotherapy areas or hot tubs. Something to keep in mind if you’re planning a spa day with your teens.

If you’re a James Bond fan – or traveling with one – you’ll find some fun, unexpected connections at this resort. My husband, a lifelong Bond enthusiast, was sitting on the beach when he suddenly recognized a familiar landmark across the water: Dr. No’s lair from the 1962 film. That long white building in the distance kicked off a whole evening of Bond-related research.

We quickly discovered that Jamaica has deep ties to the Bond franchise, with several filming locations scattered around the island. But one of the coolest surprises? Just past the dolphin area at the Moon Palace resort, you can find the ruins of the original helipad used during filming to transport cast and crew. It’s tucked away and crumbling fast – so if you’re visiting, take a stroll down the pier and check it out while it’s still standing.

It’s a fun, offbeat detail that adds even more character to the resort – especially for movie buffs.

Before you go, here are a few things I wish I’d known ahead of time – small details that can make a big difference in your experience.

You’ll likely be invited to attend a membership sales presentation. It’s entirely optional.

  • If you’re not interested, be polite but firm – just say no and walk away.
  • If you’re curious, have a clear budget, ask detailed questions, and take time to review any contract carefully. Incentives are often negotiable.
  • Set a timer as the pitch will go over-time if allowed.

Resort Credits

These can be used for things like the spa, day tours, or specialty services.

  • You’ll still need to pay tax and tips out of pocket.
  • We used ours for the spa and sunset cruise – great value.
  • Sit with the activity planners at the start of your vacation to help get the best value for your credits.

Included Transportation

Complimentary round-trip transfers are available – just book at least two weeks in advance.

  • The 90-minute drive is scenic, but next time we’ll skip the optional food/restroom stop on the way there.
  • On the way back, we stopped at a souvenir shop, which was a nice chance to grab last-minute gifts.

Don’t wait to download it! It’s incredibly useful.

  • Use it to check restaurant hours, entertainment schedules, book activities, and even restock your mini-fridge.
  • I wish we’d realized how much information is accessible through the app earlier in the trip.

Check-In Timing

We got lucky and had access to our room right away, but that’s not guaranteed.

  • Some guests have reported waiting several hours.
  • Be prepared: pack your swimsuit and sunscreen in your carry-on so you can start enjoying the resort right away.

Pack Smart

Resort shops carry essentials, but expect steep markups.

  • Bring sunscreen, pain medication, swim diapers, water wings, and floaties with you to avoid the extra cost.

Cruise Ship Crowds

Ocho Rios is a cruise port, and when ships are docked, the town and excursions can get crowded.

  • Check cruise schedules online before booking tours – you’ll get a more relaxed experience when the port is quiet.

Moon Palace Jamaica is best suited for families – especially those with kids and teens. While couples and groups will still find plenty to enjoy, the resort really shines when it comes to family-friendly amenities and activities.

Moon Palace Jamaica vs Moon Palace Cancun: Which One’s Right for You?

Now, if you’re trying to decide between Moon Palace Jamaica or Moon Palace Cancun, here’s what we found after experiencing both.

While both are Palace Elite properties, they offer very different experiences:

  • Moon Palace Cancun is significantly larger, with more restaurants, pools, activities, and nightly entertainment. It’s great for those who want nonstop options – but it can feel busier and less personal.
  • Moon Palace Jamaica, by contrast, is smaller and more relaxed. It still has plenty to do, but with a more intimate, laid-back vibe.

A few deciding factors:

  • Beach lovers, choose Jamaica. The beach here is calm, clear, and swimmable – something Cancun can’t always promise.
  • Traveling with teens? We found Jamaica ideal. We felt completely comfortable letting our teens explore on their own, and they always felt safe and visible on the property.

If you want a high-energy resort with lots of amenities, Cancun may be the better fit. But if you’re craving a beach-focused, family-friendly vacation with a more relaxed pace, Moon Palace Jamaica is hard to beat.
