I found Sitges to be a very interesting place and definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. Plus, it’s super easy to get to by train in a short amount of time, making it perfect for a day trip from Barcelona.

Sitges is located about 35 kilometres southwest of Barcelona, along the beautiful Costa Dorada. The journey is quite straightforward and convenient, taking around 40 minutes by train.

In my case, I caught the train at Passeig de Gràcia since my hotel was nearby. It was simple and so easy! The train ride to Sitges is about 40 minutes, offering a comfortable and scenic journey.
Once you arrive, the train station in Sitges is conveniently located just a block from the town’s main area. From there, it’s an easy 10-minute walk to the beach through the beautiful streets of Sitges.
In terms of cost, a single-journey train ticket is priced at €4.10, while a return journey will cost you €7.20. This combination of convenience, speed, and affordability makes this option an excellent choice for those looking to travel from Barcelona to Sitges by train.
Travel by Car or Taxi
For those preferring a more direct route, taking a taxi or driving is convenient, covering the 42 km distance in about 40 minutes. Taxi fares typically range between €75.00 to €85.00.
Travel By Bus
Travelling to Sitges from Barcelona by bus is another viable option. Bus services depart from Plaça España and Ronda Universitat during the day and are operated by Bus Garraf. The bus is a little less convenient than the train, but it is another possible option.

A trip to Sitges isn’t complete without a day at one of its seventeen sandy beaches. Whether you’re looking for gay-friendly, family-friendly, or even nudist beaches, Sitges has a spot for everyone.
The beaches closest to the city centre, like Platja de la Ribera, La Bassa Rodona, La Fragata, and Sant Sebastià, are popular and tend to be the busiest. Here, as with most Spanish beaches, it is common to see topless sunbathers.
Along the shore, you’ll also find chiringuitos (beach bars) where you can get a refreshing drink and a bite to eat, adding to the relaxed beach vibe.
Most beaches offer the convenience of renting sun loungers and umbrellas, but I opted to just bring my own towel as I wasn’t there for very long.
Overall, I found Sitges’ beaches to be much less crowded and more enjoyable than Barcelona’s, offering a perfect escape from the city hustle.

Strolling along the Passeig Marítim, also known as the Waterfront Promenade, is an experience you shouldn’t miss. This scenic promenade runs parallel to the water, beautifully connecting the various beaches of Sitges.

As a solo traveller, I felt I missed out on this fun opportunity, unfortunately! On my next visit to Sitges, I’m definitely planning to pull up a chair at a spot like Parrots Pub & Terrace, a popular venue in the heart of Sitges. The chairs and tables are arranged facing the main street, making it the perfect spot to people-watch while sipping on some impressive cocktails!
4. Visit Maricel Palace
Nestled in the peaceful ‘Quiet Corner’ of Sitges’ old quarter, Maricel Palace is a destination not to be missed. This eclectic art museum, housed in a former seaside residence, showcases a diverse array of artwork. One of its most striking features is the panoramic view of the Mediterranean from the upper terrace.
Unfortunately, during my visit, the museum was closed, so I could only admire its spectacular exterior. You will definitely need to plan ahead if you want to visit Maricel Palace when in the city.
I highly recommend checking the opening hours and booking a guided tour in advance, as this is the only way to access the interior.
Keep in mind that guided tours are only offered on certain days and English tours may be limited, so it’s best to confirm these details to ensure you don’t miss out on this “must-visit” spot.

There is also a Mercadona grocery store conveniently located near the train station. It was ideal for grabbing snacks and drinks before heading for a relaxing day on the beach.

Sitges truly comes alive at night with its vibrant and diverse nightlife scene. Located in the heart of the town is a lively “strip” that offers a fantastic mix of gay, straight, and mixed bars, each with its own unique charm.
No matter what time of year you visit, there’s always something happening, from parties to festivals that keep the energy high.
There are many different varieties of bars and entertainment to choose from, including rooftop bars, beach bars, karaoke, and live performances. Most of the party scene is concentrated within a few streets around the main drag, making it easy to explore different venues in one night.

If you’re planning a trip to Sitges and looking forward to some beach time, the ideal period to visit is from June to September. During these months, the weather is warm enough for swimming and enjoying the sunny shores.
However, Sitges is not just about its beaches. The town also hosts events such as Carnival, Pride, Sitges’ Corpus Christi, and Fiesta Major at various times throughout the year. For those interested in the nightlife, it’s easy to spend an evening in this beach town.
Initially, during my trip planning to Barcelona, I contemplated extending my day trip and staying overnight in Sitges. But as plans evolved, I opted for a day trip instead, a decision I’m ultimately very happy with.
While Sitges was enjoyable, I found that it didn’t have quite enough to keep me engaged for an entire day and night, especially as a solo traveller. Perhaps if I were travelling with friends and family, my decision would be different.
For those considering an overnight trip from Barcelona, however, personally, I’d recommend exploring the medieval town of Tossa de Mar or Girona instead. These destinations offer a richer experience for a longer stay with their unique historical charm and ample sightseeing opportunities.
On the other hand, if you are travelling with a group of people or are especially interested in spending time in this LGBTQ+ friendly location, you may want to stay even longer!
